Remote drone pilots for the aircraft and docks you fly

Docks put the aircraft on site and the pilot somewhere else. Here is how each common platform is flown remotely, and what a remote operations team needs to run it every day.

Updated

A drone program stops scaling the moment every flight needs a pilot driving to site. Docked drones and cloud flight software remove the drive. What they do not remove is the need for a trained person to plan the mission, watch the aircraft, talk to the airspace and take over when something changes.

How remote drone operations work

The aircraft lives on site

A dock (DJI Dock, Skydio Dock, Percepto and others) charges, protects and launches the drone. For sites without a dock, a field crew launches and recovers while the pilot flies from the operations center.

The pilot works from a remote operations center

Missions are planned, launched and monitored in the platform's cloud software, such as DJI FlightHub 2 or Skydio Cloud, or in your own system through the maker's API. The pilot watches live video and telemetry and can pause, reroute or take manual control.

One pilot, several aircraft

Routine automated missions let one pilot supervise several docks, stepping in for takeoff checks, anomalies and landings. Inspection close to structures, public-safety response and anything off the plan go back to one pilot per aircraft.

Data comes back with the flight

Imagery, thermal, video and flight logs are tagged by site, asset and mission, so an inspector or a model can use them without asking which flight they came from.

Rules first

Remote and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flight is regulated aircraft by aircraft and country by country. In the US that means Part 107 certified remote pilots, a waiver or exemption for BVLOS until a standing rule replaces them, and attention to which aircraft your customer or agency allows. In the EU it means the specific category under EASA rules. A good remote pilot service works inside your approvals and documents every flight; it does not ask you to stretch them.

What to have ready

Your aircraft and docks, connected to their cloud platform or to your own via the maker's API.
Your operational approvals and the procedures they assume: visual observers, airspace checks, emergency landing sites.
Mission types and their frequency: scheduled inspections, alarm response, on-demand flights.
Where the data should land and who reviews it.

Pilots are trained on your aircraft, your sites and your procedures before they fly a live mission, and the same group stays on your program so the site knowledge stays too.

Frequently asked questions

What is a remote drone pilot service?
A team of certified pilots who fly or supervise your drones from a remote operations center instead of on site. With docked drones they launch, monitor and land missions over the network; for sites without a dock, a field crew handles launch and recovery.
Can one pilot fly several drones at once?
For routine automated missions, yes: one pilot can supervise several docks and step in when needed, within what your approvals allow. Close inspection, public-safety response and anything unplanned need one pilot per aircraft.
Do remote pilots need to be certified?
In the US every pilot in command needs a Part 107 remote pilot certificate, and BVLOS operations need specific FAA approval. Other countries have their own licensing. Pilots work inside the approvals your program holds.
Which software do remote drone pilots use?
Usually the maker's cloud platform, such as DJI FlightHub 2 or Skydio Cloud, or your own system through the maker's API. Pilots are trained on whichever your program runs.
